The South
Puget Intertribal Planning Agency (SPIPA) formed in 1976 as
a 501 (c)(3), tribally chartered, intergovernmental agency. From the
beginning, SPIPA responded
to the needs and directives of member tribes.
Today the consortium
includes five Southwestern Washington tribes: the Chehalis, Nisqually,
Shoalwater Bay, Skokomish and Squaxin Island Tribes.
Organizational
Overview
The
SPIPA consortium is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of one
delegate and one alternate appointed by each Tribal Council.
To achieve the
objectives of SPIPA, the Board of Directors oversees an administrative
organization
consisting of an Executive Director and managers of: fiscal and administrative
services; planning/grant writing; social services; community services;
education/TANF/job-training;
a variety of health programs; and a public information office. Education,
while not included in our mission statement at this time, is a focus
at each tribal community and at SPIPA.
SPIPA provides
planning, technical assistance, and direct services to each tribe's
administration,
as well as to eligible Native Americans residing within SPIPA's service
area.
In addition, the
program managers, and support staff, deliver direct services to
tribal
members, which include a range of: health programs, nutrition programs,
social services and community programs.
